How to use Onsen
The perfect way to relax after a long day is in an onsen (Japanese style bath). The hot natural spring water is a great way to sooth aching muscles and revitalise in order to do it all again the next day. If it’s your first time, here are some tips.
The steps below are a guide and may vary slightly from onsen to onsen. Please watch what the locals do.
- Take off your clothes in the changing room and put your clothes on the shelf or in the basket.
- Enter the bathroom with a small modesty towel and your amenities.
- Sit down at one of the shower / wash stations and wash yourself. Soap and shampoo is often provided here. Please make sure you remove all soap and shampoo from your body and hair before entering the bath.
- Soak in the bathtub. Remember not to bring any thing into the tub, not even a towel. You can place your towel on your head if you like.
- When you are finished soaking get out of the bath and rinse your body with clean warm water From the shhower / wash station.
- Dry your body with your small towel before you go to the changing room.
- Dry your body with your bath towel and dress in the changing room.
Some extra tips for the onsen
- Do not use soap in the bath.
- The water in the bath tends to be hot in Japan. Sometimes you can adjust it by running cold water, but don’t overdo it.
- Usually, the tub water is used by others. Please remember not to drain the water when you are finished.
- Ladies, don’t put your hair in the onsen water. Before you get into the bath, tie your hair up well away from your shoulders.
